BMI is a screening number, not a diagnosis — it cannot tell muscle from fat. Nothing you enter leaves this page.

Overview

BMI is the most quoted number in everyday health and one of the least understood. It is a single ratio — weight over height squared — born in the 1830s as a tool for studying populations, not for judging individuals. This calculator returns the number, names its category, and shows the weight band that keeps you in the healthy zone, without anything you type leaving the page.

Read it as a flag, not a verdict. The formula cannot tell muscle apart from fat, and it ignores where weight sits on the body — both of which matter more than the number itself. It is a reasonable first question about weight; it was never meant to be the last one.

What does the BMI formula do?

The arithmetic never changes: kilograms divided by metres squared. Imperial users get the same answer through a converted form — 703 times pounds divided by inches squared — where the 703 is simply the constant that aligns the two unit systems. The calculator takes either input and does the conversion silently.

Results fall into four adult bands defined by the World Health Organization: below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is the healthy range, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 and above is obese. Those lines were drawn from population data, so they describe groups accurately and individuals approximately — which is why the page also computes your personal healthy weight range.

Who can use it

Anyone curious where they stand, people tracking weight changes over months, and anyone filling in a form that asks for the figure. Note the limits: athletes with heavy muscle, older adults, and teenagers all fall outside what the adult bands assume — and children's ranges work differently altogether, so a paediatric chart, not this calculator, is the right tool there. This is a screening number, not medical advice; health decisions belong in a conversation with a qualified professional.

How to use

  1. Choose Metric or Imperial at the top.
  2. Enter your height and weight.
  3. Read your BMI, its category and your position on the scale.
  4. Note the healthy weight range underneath — the practical takeaway.
  5. Keep the caveat in mind: one ratio never describes whole health.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a healthy BMI?

For most adults, 18.5 to 24.9. But context rules: a muscular athlete can exceed 25 while being fitter than a sedentary person at 22. Treat an out-of-range result as a prompt to look closer — ideally with a professional — rather than as a diagnosis.

Why two height boxes in imperial mode?

Because height is spoken as feet plus inches, not total inches. The tool accepts the familiar “5 ft 7 in” form and converts it internally, so you never do the multiplication yourself.

I lift weights and my BMI says overweight — is it wrong?

For you, yes, misleadingly so. Muscle is denser than fat, so strength athletes routinely land in “overweight” or higher while being healthy by every better measure. Waist size or body-fat percentage will tell you far more.

Can children use this calculator?

Not meaningfully with these bands. Healthy BMI ranges for children shift with age and sex, so doctors use percentile charts instead. This page applies the adult formula and cut-offs throughout.

Where does my data go?

Nowhere. The numbers are computed in the page's memory and vanish on reload. There is no database, no account and no analytics on your inputs.

Should I act on my result alone?

No. BMI is a screening aid, not medical guidance. If the number concerns you, or you are considering changes to diet or exercise because of it, talk to a qualified health professional first.

Conclusion

Take the number, take the healthy band, and take the caveat with equal seriousness. BMI opens the conversation about weight; it was never qualified to close it.
